Cloud Computing

This tip sheet highlights what cloud computing is, how different cloud systems can work, and the common services that cloud computing providers might offer. It highlights how and why some OVW grantees, agencies and partnerships might use cloud computing services. Then, it describes risks, benefits and considerations around the use of cloud computing services including technology and security, legal issues, outsourcing and third party vendors, safety planning, confidentiality, and informed consent. It references some evolving recommendations and guidance from the American Bar Association.

This piece was created by the NNEDV Safety Net Project to assist U.S. DOJ Office of Violence Against Women (DOJ-OVW) grantees with identifying and addressing victim safety concerns that can arise from using technology. It is meant to help with issue spotting. It is understood that a more in-depth look of the OVW grantee’s technology plans and implementation may be necessary to fully ensure an OVW grantee is most effectively addressing victim safety concerns.
